Gilded Tarot, Eight of Pentacles

This deck is such a beautifully designed and executed deck. Not only is it enchanting, but every card evokes powerful emotions! Below is my interpretation of the card. Isn't it perfect that the Card of the Month for October should be Major Arcana XVIII The Moon? Oh, Luna! Luna! Luna!

The Moon card from this deck is certainly beautiful but can also generate uneasiness at the same time. In this version of this tarot card the authors have chosen a beautiful goddess to represent the moon. She is other worldly looking, and she seems distant and deep in thought. This suggests that she has an escape to offer from the realities of life, but this can be dangerous, it is best to be aware of the risk of being seduced by her trance-like imaginings.

This card speaks to the qualities of the moon that are truly feminine in nature, such as feelings, needs, instincts, fantasies, seduction, intuition, shadows, illusion and disillusion, somehow just "knowing", being between the worlds, and psychism, just to name a few.

When the world is bathed in moonlight everything looks completely different. This idea can be frightening and sometimes might suggest that as human beings we would avoid challenges when we are scared. There are two castles in the background that might symbolize tension, or conflict of choice. They loom far in the distance reminding us that choices need to be made on the journey of life, for good or ill, they cannot be avoided.

This goddess wears a crescent moon on her forehead with pearls, suggesting magic, mystery and wisdom. She represents our inner world, and bridges the void between our subconscious and our conscious minds represented by the castles. The water flowing past symbolizes past emotions and her gaze goes to the world beyond as she combs her hair. She is fascinating, but beware! Do not become confused and lured into her world lest you be led astray!

The Moon herself is based on an engraving from a painting by German artist Otto Theodore Gustav Lingner (1856-?) titled "Lorelei". The background is composed from other gravings.
